  10. This Read Me file contains information about system 
  11. requirements and installation instructions.

  13. Before you install Netscape 7.02, be sure to read the 
  14. Release Notes, which describe known problems and 
  15. installation issues:

  29.  
  30. To view and use the new streamlined "Modern" theme,
  31. your display monitor should be set to display 
  32. thousands of colors. For users who cannot set their 
  33. displays to use more than 256 colors, Netscape
  34. recommends using the "Classic" theme for Netscape 7.02.
  35.     
  36. To select the Classic theme after you have installed
  37. Netscape 7.02:
  38.     
  39.      1. Open the Edit menu and choose Preferences.
  40.      2. Under the Appearance category, choose Themes.
  41.      3. Click to select the Classic theme.
  42.      4. Click OK.
  43.         Changed themes take effect after you restart 
  44.         Netscape 7.02.
  45.  
  46. During installation, the creation of temporary files
  47. requires more free disk space than listed below.
  48.

  75.       or later, with the following libraries or

  88.                  Installation Notes
  89.

  92. - For Mac OS and Windows users, it is strongly 
  93. recommended that you exit all programs before running 
  94. the setup program. Also, you should temporarily 
  95. disable virus-detection software.
  96.  
  97. - Install into a clean (new) directory. Installing on
  98. top of released product builds may cause problems.
  99.  
  100. - The Profile Manager lets you create different 
  101. profiles, each with its own bookmarks, preferences, 
  102. email settings, and other user-specific settings. To 
  103. work with profiles, you must first exit the browser, 
  104. then open the Profile Manager:
  105.  
  106.     * On Windows, open the Start menu and choose 
  107.     Programs, then Netscape 7.0, then Profile Manager.
  108.     * On Mac OS, open the Netscape folder and then 
  109.     double-click the Profile Manager.
  110.     * On Linux, type the following at the command 
  111.     line: 
  112.       ./netscape -profilemanager
  113.  
  114. For more information, open the Help menu, choose Help 
  115. and Support Center, and click Managing Profiles.
  116.  
  117. - If you have problems connecting to web sites after 
  118. you install Netscape 7.02, you may need to check your 
  119. proxy configuration settings. For information on 
  120. the settings you should use, speak to your system 
  121. administrator.

  123. For information on how to change proxy settings, open 
  124. the Help menu, choose Help and Support Center, click 
  125. Search, and type "proxy".

  133. *Installation Instructions -- Windows
  134.      
  135.      1. If you are installing from the CD: 
  136.      - Double-click the Windows directory on the 
  137.      Netscape 7.0 CD to open it, if you haven't 
  138.      done so already. 
  139.      
  140.      If you are downloading from the Netscape site:
  141.      - Click the NSSetup.exe link to download it to
  142.      your machine.
  143.      
  144.      2. Double-click the NSSetup.exe program icon on 
  145.      your machine to begin the Setup program.
  146.      
  147.      3. Follow the on-screen instructions in the 
  148.      Setup program. The program starts automatically 
  149.      the first time.
  150.  
  151.      Note: On Windows, Netscape 7.02 includes 
  152.      Quick Launch. Quick Launch shortens the time it 
  153.      takes for Netscape to start. If your computer is 
  154.      low on memory, and you enable Quick Launch during
  155.      installation, you have the option in Netscape
  156.      to temporarily or permanently disable Quick 
  157.      Launch. For more information about using Quick
  158.      Launch, open the Help menu and choose Help and 
  159.      Support Center; then click the Search tab in the 
  160.      left frame, type "Quick Launch", and press Enter.

  162. *Installation Instructions -- Mac OS 8.x, 9.x
  163.  
  164.      Note: It is strongly recommended that you do not
  165.      disable extensions before installing Netscape 7.02
  166.      on Mac OS 8.x or 9.x. In particular, QuickTime is
  167.      required for installation to proceed.
  168.  
  169.      1. If you are installing from the CD:
  170.      - Skip to step 3 now.
  171.      
  172.      If you are downloading from the Netscape site:
  173.      - Click the Netscape-mac-stub.bin link. 
  174.  
  175.      2. Double-click the Netscape Installer 
  176.      folder.
  177.      
  178.      3. Double-click the Netscape Installer 
  179.      icon.
  180.      
  181.      4. Follow the on-screen instructions to 
  182.      complete the installation process. The 
  183.      program starts automatically the first time.
  184.      
  185. *Installation Instructions -- Mac OS X
  186.  
  187.      1. If you are installing from the CD:
  188.      - Skip to step 3 now.
  189.  
  190.      If you are downloading from the Netscape site:
  191.      - Click the Netscape-macosX.smi.bin link.
  192.           
  193.      If the downloaded file does not expand 
  194.      automatically, you must expand the file using a 
  195.      program such as StuffIt Expander. If you don't 
  196.      have StuffIt Expander, you can get a copy by
  197.      visiting:

  201.      2. Double-click the .smi file to open Apple Disk 
  202.      Copy utility and mount the disk image as 
  203.      "Netscape for MacOS X". (If it launches Classic 
  204.      instead, stop Classic and make sure the file name 
  205.      ends with .smi.)
  206.  
  207.      3. Open the volume called Netscape for MacOS X 
  208.      and **copy** the Netscape folder anywhere on your 
  209.      hard drive. (If you attempt to launch Netscape 
  210.      directly from the disk image, it will crash.)
  211.  
  212.      4. Unmount the disk image, if necessary, by 
  213.      dragging the Netscape for MacOS X icon to the 
  214.      trash.
  215.  
  216.      5. Launch Netscape from the folder you copied 
  217.      to your hard drive.
  218.  
  219. *Installation Instructions -- Unix
  220.  
  221.      1. If you are installing from the CD:
  222.      - Change to the Linux directory on the CD: 
  223.      cd linux. Then skip to step 3.
  224.      
  225.      If you are downloading from the Netscape site:
  226.      - Download the 
  227.      netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz 
  228.      archive.
  229.  
  230.      2. Type one of the following to gunzip and 
  231.      untar the archive: 
  232.  
  233. tar -zxvf netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz
  234.  
  235.      OR
  236.  
  237. gzip -dc netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz | tar xvf -
  238.      
  239.      3. Change to the directory that contains the
  240.      Netscape installation files:
  241.      cd netscape-installer
  242.  
  243.      4. Run the Netscape 7.0 Installer with the run 
  244.      script:
  245.        ./netscape-installer
  246.      
  247.      5. Follow the on-screen instructions to 
  248.      complete the installation process.
  249.  
  250.      6. To start Netscape, change to the directory 
  251.      where you installed it and run the program: 
  252.        ./netscape 
  253.      The program starts automatically the first time.
